Book/DVD set. Traditional music from Ireland and Scotland arranged for solo guitar. Arrangements by Pierre Bensusan, El McMeen, Martin Simpson, Pat Kirtley, Duck Baker, Tom Long & Steve Baughman. Less than a century ago you'd find this music performed on fiddle, pipes, button accordion, flutes and whistles, but never guitar. For those translating Celtic traditional music the challenge is to preserve the unique qualities of the style. The popularity of alternate tunings in Celtic music tends to come from two different directions. One is in the desire for the tonalities of droning instruments, a la the bagpipes, and tunings such as DADGAD and EADEAE make this effect relatively easy. There are also guitar tunings which lend themselves easily to the melodic steps and fullness found in the Celtic harp, such as DGDGBD (open G tuning) and the CGDGAD. Features all the tunes transcribed in note/tab plus a 2 hour DVD of each artist playing his arrangements. Intermediate. 136 pp.
