Made by Francis (or Francois) Simonin, son of noted French maker Charles Simonin, Francis immigrated to the U.S. in the early part of the 20th century moving to Cleveland, this exceptional violin is a very fine Guadagnini model, two piece back of medium curl with the flame arranged so it all goes in the same direction, antiqued amber varnish, ebony fittings, there is a minor repaired crack to the right of the treble f-hole and the lower treble bout edge and corner cap have been replaced, the end block and bass bar have both been replaced, it has a big open rich fairly dark tone, G-VGC, with old shaped case suitable for shipping.
