Upcoming Workshops: Hiroya Tsukamoto and Craig Chee & Sarah Maisel

We have a couple great workshops coming up this month, hosted by guitarist/composer Hiroya Tsukamoto and dynamic ukulele duo Craig Chee & Sarah Maisel.

Intro to Composing for Guitar: A Workshop with Hiroya Tsukamoto

We're delighted to host Hiroya Tsukamoto in a special workshop on writing music for the guitar!

Using his compositions as an example, Hiroya will demonstrate how to start composing and developing an original guitar piece for a live setting. Learn and deconstruct the elements of song structure, including intros, verses, choruses, bridges, and outros, and how to distill your composition down to its essence. Hiroya also shares what he cares about when composing and what he is thinking when he writes.

Hiroya Tsukamoto is a one-of-a-kind composer, guitarist, and singer-songwriter from Kyoto, Japan. In 2000, he received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music and came to the US. Since then, he has been performing internationally, including appearances at Blue Note in New York and Japanese National Television. Hiroya has released six albums.

Players of any and all guitar techniques and styles - even players of other instruments - are welcome!

Song Arranging: Ukulele Workshop with Craig Chee & Sarah Maisel

The darlings of the ukulele universe, the sweetly sophisticated and fabulously fun Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel, are returning to Elderly Instruments!

"This class will be focused on arranging for jazz standards. We will cover altered chord voicings, melodic movement, intros and outros. Be prepared to do several chord shapes you are not used to using, and to move quickly through a musical chart. Be prepared to use barre chords. We will also discuss jazz notation, and creating charts for your band."

For intermediate players. We will provide follow-up material to ensure you can master this at your own pace afterward.

Craig and Sarah have made an incredible splash in the ukulele scene with their complementing styles and vocal harmonies. They've been featured at uke festivals and events all over the world, and feel very fortunate to have been featured on the cover of Ukulele Magazine! Their joy for music and teaching always follows them wherever they travel.
