OLD MINSTREL BANJO (1800's)
21 Photos
VG-EC, this is a very unique handmade fretless banjo from (most likely) the mid to late 1800's with: ~13" skin head, oak rim is ~5/16" thick at bottom and twice that at top end (see photos), 6 hand-wrought head tighteners, curly maple neck has ~1-3/8" ebony nut, peghead has modified rectangular shape with large nickel silver star in a circle in center of peghead, 10 bone "fret markers" may have been added later (but they do not relate to a western fret scale, so are just decorative), large heart-shaped nickel silver inlay high up the neck marks the octave for ~26-1/2" scale, ebony violin style pegs appear to be more recent, dowel stick is inlaid into bass of neck and extends like a perch pole through the rim and the strings attach to the perch pole extension. This is a very unique and very old banjo which could be among the earliest made in the minstrel era (based on how the strings attach and the unusual hardware although we have no way to verify this). Currently strung with Aquila Minstrel Banjo strings - fine sound.
