What is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival? To quote the Lonely Planet Guide to Scotland: First held in 1947 to mark a return to peace after the ordeal of WWII [the Fringe] is festooned with superlatives the oldest, the most famous and the best in the world. The original was a modest affair, but today hundreds of the worlds top musicians and performers congregate in Edinburgh for 3 weeks of diverse and inspirational music, opera, theater and dance. Professional as well as amateur performances permeate the Fringe Festival. It is a great honor to be chosen as a participant. It could be called the Olympics of international theater. Here are some relevant facts: a) Fringe 2007 featured 31,000 performances of 2,050 shows in 250 venues b) 1.7 million tickets (1,697,293) were sold during the 2007 Fringe smashing all arts festival records worldwide. c) 304 shows at the Fringe were absolutely free. d) Monty Python, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Emma Thompson, and Rowan Atkinson all began their careers at the Fringe. e) Robin Williams, Jude Law, and Hugh Grant have all performed there.
