We've been saying for a year or more that Lansing's fast becoming "LanSing"--a singing community. One Michigan folksinger who has contributed greatly to the fast-growing "community singing" concept is Matt Watroba, winner of the Detroit Music Awards' Best Overall Folk Performer Award in 2000, host of the long-popular radio show "Folks Like Us" (now heard on WEMU 89.1) and an active songleader and singing-workshop teacher.
Matt's successful "Singing 101" workshop will benefit folks who love to sing and folks who want to become comfortable with singing in groups--and experienced singers, too. In "Singing 101" you'll learn: all about your voice and how to keep it going strong for a long time to come; how to project your voice and go from being a shy singer to a bold singer; how to blend your voice with other singers; tips on how to lead a group in song, and more. All levels are welcome including singer-wannabees. Prior public singing experience is NOT necessary. You don't have to read music to benefit from this welcoming workshop. Bring water to slate your thirst.
Matt has been active in the growing mid-Michigan "singing scene" since its inception. He shared his talents as both a songleader and a workshop presenter at the 2003 and 2004 Mid-Winter Singing Festivals and recently led (with fellow songleaders Joel Mabus and Pat Madden) the Ark's first Singing Night. The Ten Pound Fiddle Coffeehouse is proud to host a Singing Night with Matt Watroba on Friday, December 10, 2004, at 8 pm at the U.U.C., 855 Grove Street, East Lansing. Given all these and other ever-increasing singing events, we're especially pleased to have Matt offer this singing workshop for folks like us.
In addition to his radio-show talents, voice workshops, and songleading abilities, Matt's a popular traditional performer. You may know him from his annual Thanksgiving concerts at the Ark or his Ann Arbor Folk Festival performances (or any of many other festival appearances, including Spirit of the Woods and Missouri's Big Muddy Folk Festival). You may have heard his recordings, including the recently-released Jukebox Folk, a compendium of classic country covers and several of his own songs, all sung with Matt's familial warmth, expression, and sensitivity.
Space is limited, so sign up soon. It'll be two hours of warm-and-fuzzy "funwork."
