"Up-Close with LJ"--a Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop with Laurence Juber

"If you want to be schooled on how to bring music to life, check him out...."

Thursday , October 07, 2004
07:00 pm - 9:00 p.m.
Location: Elderly Instruments
workshop ($37.50)

Titled "Up-Close with LJ," this two-hour hands-on workshop offers a relatively effortless way to improve your fingerstyle playing and learn to play in LJ's styles as he demonstrates his approach to composing and arranging music for fingerstyle guitar, with emphasis on altered tunings. It's an entertaining and enlightening multi-level workshop intended for players of any level. Please bring your guitar.

Clinician, composer, director, producer, performing soloist,* studio artist, teacher, band leader, musicologist, songwriter, lead guitarist with Paul McCartney's Wings, Laurence Juber is without doubt among the most accomplished, prolific, and well-rounded guitarists in the world today.

"LJ" was a featured soloist with England's National Youth Jazz Orchestra, earning a music degree at London University while playing guitar for Jesus Christ Superstar and other popular West End musicals. He played lead guitar on the Academy-Award-nominated soundtrack to The Spy Who Loved Me, won the first "Best Rock Instrumental" Grammy award, and played in the all-star lineup for the UNICEF Concerts for The People of Kampuchea. His playing is featured on the mega-platinum Dirty Dancing soundtrack and the Oscar-winning scores to Pocahontas and Good Will Hunting.

LJ was voted #1 Guitarist by the readers of Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine and was honored by the Martin Guitar Company with his own "LJ" signature model, which was recognized with the coveted "Editors Pick Award" by Guitar Player Magazine.

Guitar Player referred to LJ as "a master of timbral and dynamic shading" who "draws you in like a seasoned storyteller." About his album Guitar Noir, the magazine wrote, "He's an extremely nuanced player and the moods he can pull out...are pretty astounding. If you want to be schooled in how to bring music to life, check him out..."

"A watershed acoustic stylist..." proclaims Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine. If you'd like to improve your fingerstyle playing, don't miss this excellent workshop opportunity.

*You can also see LJ in concert at the Creole Gallery, 1218 Turner Street [right around the corner from Elderly], on Friday, October 8, at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Elderly, Archives Book Shop, and at www.creolegallery.com.
