Location: Elderly Instruments

This hands-on Intermediate-level Clawhammer Banjo Workshop is geared toward intermediate-level clawhammer players, students who want to add confidence, style, and technique to their playing. Dick will discuss how to alter and improve techniques that are limiting your playing skills. Other topics will include: tunes and expanding your repertoire (with tune demonstrations and tablatures); advanced right-hand technique (double-thumbing, Galax techniques); when to use left-hand techniques (slides, hammers, and pulls); advanced tunings (modal, Sandy River Belle tuning, open C tuning); solving fingernail problems, leaving bump-ditty patterns and playing waltzes; and playing different styles of music.
Intermediate clawhammer players will leave this 90-minute workshop with increased confidence, smoother techniques, and added skills.
Attend both this workshop and Dick's Beginner Workshop in the morning [see previous event] for $50, and save $10. It's an excellent opportunity to fine-tune your skill and technique.
Dick Kimmel has played and taught clawhammer-style playing for many years. Clawhammer music is the focus of his 2000 Copper Creek recording Fishin' Creek Blues, and his companion Mel Bay Publications tablature book with the same title is on the shelf. Dick was one of two American banjoists--and the only frailer--on the French recording Banjo Influences. He has been a regular performer for IBMA's Masters' Clawhammer Banjo Workshops and has been invited to lead the clawhammer offering for the October 2004 World of Bluegrass Festival.
