This hands-on Beginning Clawhammer Banjo Workshop is geared to students just beginning to play clawhammer-style banjo. Dick will cover many of the important basics of playing clawhammer banjo, such as: right-hand position and the bump-ditty picking rhythm; clawhammer tunings and use of a capo (G tuning, Double C tuning, C tuning); left-hand techniques (fretting, slides, pulls, and hammers); jamming techniques and jamming with songs you don't know; learning tunes by ear and by tablature (includes tune demonstrations and tablatures).

Beginning clawhammer banjo players will leave this 90-minute workshop with knowledge of the skills it takes to properly play a variety of banjo tunes in various tunings. PLEASE BRING YOUR BANJO.

Dick Kimmel has played clawhammer since the '60s. He is sought as a workshop and music camp instructor on banjo, mandolin, guitar, traditional singing, and the history of traditional music. He has recorded over two dozen albums and toured Europe and North America. He was the first person to publish clawhammer tablature in Bluegrass Unlimited, Banjo Newsletter, and Banjo Package, a Japanese banjo magazine.
