A FREE Old-Time Music & Dance Variety Show by Bernstein and Baugus

Buckdancing, Hambone, Fiddle Sticks, and Mountain Preaching, Oh My!

Monday , July 12, 2004
05:30 pm
Location: Elderly Instruments
in-store performance (free)

Tony Award "Best Musical" nominee dancer and musician IRA BERNSTEIN and virtuoso Piedmont clawhammer banjo artist RILEY BAUGUS are offering a FREE Appalachian Roots Old-Time Music and Dance "Variety Show" at Elderly on Monday, July 12, at 5:30 p.m.

Although Elderly's free in-store performances run less than an hour, you'll still see a great mix of what Bernstein & Baugus offer their audiences: percussive flatfooting and buckdancing, rhythm tap dancing, French-Canadian step dancing, English clogging, South African boot dancing, hambone, fiddle tunes, fiddle sticks, southern Appalachian songs and ballads, old-time banjo and fiddle tunes, a bit of "mountain preaching," and double fiddle duets. Wow! All that and plenty of humor, too.

This dynamic duo entertains audiences of all ages with popular Appalachian Roots concerts that include a mix of traditional dance, song, and instrumental music from the southern Appalachian region of the U.S., with a few international twists tossed in.
Having spent late 2003 touring England with their captivating old-timey revue, Bernstein & Baugus are currently playing a little closer to home; these Wheatland Festival favorites are performing at the Blissfest Music & Dance Festival [in Goodheart near Petosky, July 9-11] before stopping at Elderly to entertain our patrons--and the staff, too.

Ira has performed in concerts and at festivals across the U.S. and Canada and in 13 European and Asian countries. He was an artistic creator and featured soloist in Mountain Legacy and has repeatedly won first place in the Mount Airy Fiddler's Convention Old-Time Flatfooting Competition. Ira teaches Master Dance classes of all kinds--including Cape Breton step dancing--and directs the Ten Toe Percussion Ensemble. He lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.

Riley has been active on the old-time music scene for years as a talented guitarist, fiddler, and banjo player with a variety of stringbands. He has toured Europe with The Farmer's Daughters and England with The Konnarock Critters and in 2000 he toured Ireland with Dirk Powell and Tim O'Brien. He lives in North Carolina and currently plays with Cuttin' Loose and Polecat Creek when he's not building fine old-time banjos, blacksmithing, or touring with Ira.

Stop in, bring the kids, enjoy the entertainment, and check out Appalachian Roots: Fiddles and Feet..., a newly-released CD by these two skilled and popular purveyors of mountain music.
