"Singing for Shy People--No Wrong Notes" - a David Roth Workshop

For "terrified" beginners: feel safe, overcome fear, and enjoy singing!

Saturday , April 17, 2004
10:00 am - 12:00 noon
Location: Elderly Instruments
workshop ($25.00)

David Roth's popular workshop "Singing for Shy People," developed especially for people who are shy or afraid to sing in the presence of others, offers a "safe" place for anyone who sings or would like to sing. He wants his students to "have fun, be inspired, and get stimulated" in a forum where "undivided attention and respect for everyone in the room is paramount."

This "highly interactive, playful and profound" Singing Workshop
is open to all, regardless of comfort level or prior experience.
David's own description of "Singing for Shy People" says it best:

"Are you nervous about singing in front of other people? Do you feel as though you can't carry a tune in a bag?...Has someone convinced you that your musical voice is better left unheard? Just wanna warble?....Take a deep breath, enter the 'laboratory of no wrong notes,' and join our instant angelic choir. This workshop is for...those who may have been discouraged by others, by circumstances, by self-judgment, by inner-critics, or by fear....We learn that singing is easy...Through sighs, sounds, songs, rounds, chants, groans, guffaws, dreams, and desires, we'll use every opportunity....A sense of humor is helpful."

David appears at a wide variety of concert halls, coffeehouses, conferences, and workshop centers across the U.S. and Canada, and is currently resident bard of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, N.Y., where his successful "Singing for Shy People" workshop has been popular with the "chronically timid" for years.

David is a longtime singer, songwriter, recording artist [he has several CDs to his credit, carried by Elderly], occasional National Anthem singer for the Chicago Bulls, and contributor to the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul books. He has won numerous awards and has played his song "Earth" at the 40th Anniversary of the United Nations. His "Rising in Love" was performed at the 100th Anniversary of Carnegie Hall.

He's also well-known for his appearances at corporate and group functions, providing inspirational guidance and team-building exercises through song and humor.

"The talented listener can tell when someone is singing from the soul, and when they are, that makes it good.... I've never found one who couldn't sing when you put them in a nonjudgmental, noncompetitive environment," explained David in a Lancaster, PA, News article titled "Heavy Mental: David Roth champions 'folk' music and people who say they can't sing."

Here's how David's own "...Shy People" workshop description ends:
"No prior musical experience is necessary. Bring a song [or two] that you love [or would love] to sing, and instruments if you like, whether you kow how to play them or not." We suggest signing up early [by phone with a credit card or in person at the store] because space is limited.

David Roth will also perform Friday evening, April 16, at 8:00 p.m. at the Ten Pound Fiddle Coffeehouse located at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 855 Grove Street in East Lansing.
