CucanandyCeltic music, dance & song from Ireland, Canada, Scotland & the American South
Cucanandy (koo-kuh-NAHN-dee) is a Celtic band from North Carolina that brings its own unique blend of songs, tunes and traditional percussive dance to festivals, concert halls, theaters and coffeehouses. Called "electric" and "a whirlwind of creative activity" by reviewers, this group delights audiences around the country with their music and dance "designed to stir the soul or quicken the pulse of anyone within hailing distance." Cucanandy's bright and percussive tapestry of sounds spring from the inherent energy of Celtic traditional music, drawing on repertoire and style from Ireland, Cape Breton, and Scotland, but also finding inspiration in music from Brittany, French Canada and North Carolina. Cucanandy is one of only a few bands today whose concerts evoke a time when dancing, songs and instrumentals were all part of the same experience. Step dance and flatfoot rhythms are fully integrated into the band's arrangements of tunes, songs and mouth music, providing both intriguing visual and aural components to the show. Band members Mike Casey (flute, guitar), Malke Rosenfeld (percussive dance, flute), Stephanie Johnston (vocals, guitar, bodhran) and Jason Cade (fiddle, mandolin) all have deep respect for the traditions they have spent decades learning. Surrounded now by the living traditions in their home state of North Carolina, they have spent time in Ireland, Cape Breton, and Brittany learning from master teachers and honing their craft.
