Originally compiled in 1867 by William Francis Allen, Charles Pickard Ware and Lucy McKim Garrison, this was one of the first collections of African-American folk songs. The 136 songs featured include spirituals, work songs, field hollers, soldier songs of Civil War days, and freedom songs, providing the basis for subsequent expressions of gospel, blues, and jazz. This edition includes useful piano settings for every song from the original edition, with chords for guitar.
