BACON GRAND CONCERT (1920's) 11 photos
VG-EC, donut style tone ring, natural finish, maple resonator with dark back veneer and 2 f-holes, 24 brackets, 11" head, maple neck with dark veneer and inlay on back of headstock, nice replacement 22-fret ebony fingerboard with fancy pearl inlays, 1-3/16" nut width, ~27" scale length, cream-bound body, ivoroid-bound neck, gold friction tuners with pearloid buttons (2nd tuner replaced), front headstock veneer with "Bacon" script and fancy inlay, dowel stick has been repaired (partially sawed off and a graphite rod has been inserted to secure the repair, which is invisible from the outside), really nice and rare old Bacon, on consignment, with oversized period HSC (green lining), price reduced (SN:5973)

BACON MONTANA SPECIAL (1924) 26 photos
VG-EC, believed to be made for cowboy star Montana (who dressed in all white and was called the "Cowboy Beau Brummel" and for whom the later series of Bacon & Day ivoroid banjos were named) but in any event is one of very few similar banjos to have surfaced, 11" plastic head, 27-1/16" scale, 1-7/32" nut width, unique tone ring reminiscent of Vega tubaphone but with a solid instead of hollow tube with holes (see photos), 24 brackets, natural finish 9/16" maple rim with ivoroid exterior and ivoroid trim on back edge, natural finish 2-piece maple (possibly white holly) neck, ivoroid-bound ivoroid fretboard with nice pearl inlays, ivoroid peghead overlay with multiple rhinestones inlaid in the form of two stars, Planetary (marked "Planet PAT PEND.) tuners with ivoroid buttons, friction 5th peg, modern replacement No Knot tailpiece (covers area where there was a 4-string tailpiece built into the tension hoop - Montana was a 4-string plectrum player), sounds great, super rare, with Harptone HSC (black with violet interior), price reduced (SN:16606)

EC, 11/16" mahogany rim with Whyte Laydie tone ring, 11" Five Star frosted head, 24 brackets, ebony fretboard is scooped above 17th fret, pearl star in peghead and dots on fretboard, Five Star planetary tuners and geared 5th string tuner with black plastic buttons, bottom edge of rim painted black, banjo is named for the town of Galax, Virginia, which hosts a renowned yearly fiddle and banjo competi1-1/4" nut width, ~26-3/8" scale, made in USA, with arched-lid HSC (burgundy lining) (SN:2862)

EC, 12" clear plastic head that has been painted white on the backside (painting was done with head on rim so there is paint on the tone ring and specks on the inside of rim), 5/16" walnut block rim with walnut edge cap, brass tone ring, 24 brackets, mahogany neck and dowel stick, "Dobson" style heel, rosewood fingerboard with scoop above the 17th fret, no fingerboard inlays, side dots only, no inlay in rosewood peghead overlay, 5 geared tuners with black buttons, "No Knot" reissue tailpiece, nickel hardware, 1-5/16" nut width, ~25-5/8" scale, nice sound, hand crafted in USA by Lo Gordon, on consignment, with TKL black HSC (charcoal lining) (SN:364)

EC, ~10-7/8" plastic head, nickel-plated metal clad wood rim, 28 brackets (one replaced hook and nut), 2-piece maple neck with ivoroid bound ebony fingerboard, 22 frets, neck is identical to Whyte Laydie No.2: pearwood peghead overlay with pearl griffin, star and oak leaf inlays, oak leaf, christmas tree and star fingerboard inlays (inlays appear nicely re-engraved), "NO KNOT - PAT. NOV. 19 - 1901" tailpiece, 5 mechanical friction tuners with ivoroid buttons, nickel silver plate on dowel stick reads "The A.C. FAIRBANKS Co. - MAKERS - Boston. Mass." Good sound!! Appears all original except for one hook and nut, 1-5/16" nut width, ~26" scale (SN:25890)

EC, 12" fiberskyn head, 1/2" flamed maple rim is 3-1/4" deep, ebony tone ring, 28 brackets, engraved shoe bolt cover inside rim, ebony rim cap, ivoroid bound rim and fingerboard, rope pattern purfling strips on inner and outer rim plus beneath tone ring, b-r-b underlay on fingerboard, peghead, heelcap and backstrap, 16 fret ebony fingerboard with Flesher "Grand Cottilion" inlay pattern that carries over to front and back of peghead and heelcap (reminiscent of classic 19th century inlays), Fairbanks style heel carve on highly flamed maple neck, Five Star planetary tuners with ivoroid buttons, Kerschner tailpiece, all hardware including tension hoop, armrest, tailpiece and shoebolt cover is heavily engraved and nickel plated, very fine sound, 1-5/16" nut width, ~26-1/4" scale, made in USA, on consignment, with TKL arched-lid HSC (burgundy lining) (SN:155)

EC except needs minor work (file sharp fret ends, setup, etc. - sold AS-IS), 10-7/8" skin head, double metal clad rim, no dowel stick or co-ordinator rods, neck is attached with heavy brass plate and lag bolt (original), 24 brackets, notched tension hoop, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard with pearl inlays at frets 1, 5, 7, 10 and 12, 2 stars and a stylized 5 pointed asterisk (large) in ebony peghead overlay, 19 frets, strung with nylon strings, action is a bit on the high side, 5 ivoroid plastic friction tuners, screwed-on pearl heel-cap is engraved "THE - L & H - *STAR* - BANJO - CHICAGO - U.S.A." (one corner is chipped), ebony and maple(?) underlays beneath headstock and fingerboard, excellent sound
